Halal Restaurants in Europe by City — Our 2026 Count
By the Halal Europe Guide Research Team · Published: 2026-10-24 · Updated: 2026-10-24 · Counted: 24 October 2026
The short version: Halal Europe Guide's city guides currently feature 159 halal restaurants across 20 European cities in 14 countries — counted listing by listing from our own published guides on 24 October 2026. Zurich has the largest guide with 9 featured restaurants; most cities feature 8. This page is the only place this count exists: it is our own data, from our own guides, and the full table plus a free CSV download are below.
People ask us two questions more than any others: "How many halal restaurants are there in Europe?" and "Which city is best for halal food?" The honest answer to the first is that nobody knows — there is no official census of halal restaurants in Europe. So instead of guessing, we counted the one dataset we know completely: our own guides.
Every restaurant in this count has its own listing in one of our city guides — a name, an area or address, and a halal-status label that we checked against the restaurant's own statements and public sources. This page publishes that count openly: city by city, with the method explained, so journalists, bloggers, students and travellers can use real numbers instead of recycled guesses.
One warning before the table: these numbers measure our coverage, not the cities. A city showing 7 featured restaurants may have hundreds of halal restaurants in real life — we have simply verified and listed 7 of them so far. The numbers: featured halal restaurants by city
Counted on 24 October 2026 from the published guides on this site. Every city name links to its full guide, where each counted restaurant has its own checked listing.

What the count shows
Coverage is remarkably even. Every one of our 20 guides features between 7 and 9 restaurants — no city is padded with filler, and none is a token page. Seventeen guides feature exactly 8 restaurants, Zurich leads with 9, and Berlin and Warsaw sit at 7.
The United Kingdom is our deepest-covered country. Four UK cities — London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow — account for 32 of the 159 featured restaurants. Spain and Italy follow with 16 each (two cities apiece), then Germany with 15.
The map is wide, not just deep. The 20 cities span 14 countries, from Lisbon in the west to Warsaw in the east, and from Copenhagen in the north to Rome in the south — the full list of cities is in our Europe halal travel guide.
How we counted — methodology
What we counted: on 24 October 2026 we went through each of our 20 published city guides and counted every restaurant that has its own listing entry — a named restaurant presented with its area or street address and a halal-status label, checked against the restaurant's own website or signage and public directory sources before it was listed.
What we did not count: restaurants named only in passing, places in our "what we left out" sections (famous names we excluded because we could not verify a halal claim), hotels, mosques, shops and cafés without a restaurant listing. One special case: our Copenhagen guide presents its restaurants in a quick-picks table that links to full listings — we counted the 8 restaurants named in that table.
What "featured" means: the restaurant appears in a Halal Europe Guide city guide with a checked listing. It does not mean we certify its halal status — no guide honestly can. Each listing shows what the restaurant itself states and what we could verify; read how halal certification works in Europe for the labels explained.
Why the numbers will change: guides are living documents. We add listings when we can verify them, remove them when restaurants close, and refresh each guide regularly. This page is recounted whenever the guides change, and the date at the top always shows when the current count was made.
Corrections: spotted a featured restaurant that has closed, or one we should check for a guide? Tell us through our contact page — reader corrections are how this data stays honest.
What this data does not show
It would be easy — and wrong — to read this table as "Zurich has more halal restaurants than Berlin." It does not show that. Berlin's real halal scene is far larger than 7 restaurants; 7 is simply how many we have checked and featured so far. The real number of halal restaurants in Europe runs into the many thousands, most of them small family businesses that no database fully captures.
What this page gives you instead is something rarer: a count with an open method, from a named source, on a stated date, that anyone can verify by opening the guides and counting along. If you cite these numbers, please cite them for what they are — restaurants featured in Halal Europe Guide's guides — and link back so your readers can check the method too.
Frequently asked questions
How many halal restaurants are featured in Halal Europe Guide's guides?
159 halal restaurants, counted listing by listing across our 20 city guides on 24 October 2026. That number covers only the restaurants featured in our own guides — it is not a count of every halal restaurant in Europe.
Which city has the most featured restaurants in your guides?
Zurich, with 9 featured restaurants. Most of our city guides feature 8 restaurants, and Berlin and Warsaw feature 7. These numbers describe the size of our guides, not the size of each city's real halal scene.
Does 159 mean there are only 159 halal restaurants in Europe?
No. Europe has many thousands of halal restaurants, and no official census of them exists. The 159 on this page are simply the restaurants we have checked and featured in our own city guides so far.
How did you count the restaurants?
We went through each of our 20 published city guides and counted every restaurant that has its own listing entry — a name, an area or address, and a halal-status label. Places mentioned only as excluded examples were not counted. The count was made on 24 October 2026.
Can I use this data in my article, video or research?
Yes. The table and the downloadable CSV are free to reuse — in articles, videos, presentations and research — as long as you credit Halal Europe Guide and link back to this page.
How often is this page updated?
We recount whenever our city guides change — when new listings are verified, a guide is refreshed, or a new city is added. The date at the top of this page always shows when the current count was made.
Why do some cities show more restaurants than others?
Because the counts measure our guides, not the cities. A city with 7 featured restaurants may have a huge halal scene we have only partly covered, while a smaller city may be fully covered at 8. We add listings only after checking them, so coverage grows city by city.
Can my restaurant be added to the count?
Yes — restaurants can request a free listing through our Add a Restaurant page. We check every submission before it appears in a guide, and only checked listings are added to this count.
