Is Subway Halal in the UK?

Published: 2026-10-19 · Updated: 2026-10-19

The short version: Not nationwide — but the answer is better than most chains. Around 200 of Subway's 2,000+ UK stores are fully halal-certified: every meat they serve is halal and no pork is served at all. The majority of UK Subways are standard stores with no halal certification. Status is strictly store-by-store, and this guide shows you how to find a certified one and what to order there.

Subway has one of the cleanest chain-halal models in Britain: its halal stores aren't “halal-option” stores, they're halal-only stores — no pork on the menu, no non-halal meat in the building. That makes them, when you can find one, a more complete halal option than most fast-food chains. The problem is finding one: roughly 1 in 10 UK Subways is certified, they cluster in a handful of cities, and the chain doesn't exactly shout about them. This guide covers how the certified stores work, where they are, what's actually halal on the menu, and the checks to run before you order.

We are not affiliated with Subway and we do not certify anything. Below is how the UK halal-store program actually works, based on the chain's own store data, certification bodies and independent halal guides.

How we checked this guide

  • Subway UK's own store data — the chain's store locator includes a halal filter, and Subway has confirmed that around 200 of its 2,000+ UK locations are fully halal-certified. When both companies at the centre of the March 2026 social-media rumours (of chains going “fully halal” nationwide) were asked, Subway confirmed the ~200 figure and that no nationwide change had happened.
  • Certification bodies — halal Subway stores source meat from Dawn Farm Foods in Ireland, certified by the Islamic Foundation of Ireland, with many stores also displaying HFA (Halal Food Authority) certification. We checked what the certifiers' frameworks require for store-level certification.
  • Independent 2026 halal guides — halalspy.com and halalcodecheck.com published detailed 2026 breakdowns of the UK halal Subway network: signage standards (“All Meats Are Halal”), the store clusters by city, and the bread-and-sauce caveats that certification doesn't cover.
  • What we do not do: we do not treat a store's halal claim as transferable to any other store, we do not repeat uncertified social-media lists of “halal Subways”, and we do not call the bread or sauces halal-certified — the certification covers the meat program, and we say exactly that.

The model: halal-only stores, not halal-option stores

This distinction is the whole story. In KFC's UK halal trial stores, the chicken is halal but the store is still a mixed operation. A certified halal Subway is different: it serves only halal meat and it does not serve pork at all. Bacon, pepperoni and ham come off the menu entirely and are replaced by halal alternatives such as turkey ham and turkey rashers. There is no non-halal meat anywhere in the building to cross-contaminate with.

That matters for two reasons. First, cross-contamination — the single biggest halal concern in mixed fast-food kitchens — is structurally reduced: the meats in the prep line are all halal. Second, it makes the signage meaningful. A store displaying “All Meats Are Halal” on the window, menu panel and nutrition boards is making a whole-store claim, not an item-level one. That's why, among the big chains, halal Subway stores rank among the strongest options for strict diners who also want the convenience of a chain.

The catch, as always: only about 1 in 10 UK stores works this way. The other ~1,800+ are standard Subways with bacon, ham and conventional meat — not halal in any sense.

Where the halal Subways are (quick picks)

Certified stores cluster where Muslim communities are largest. The table below summarizes the main clusters from independent 2026 guides — use it as a starting map, then confirm the specific store on Subway UK's own locator.

Subway UK does not sell alcohol at any store, halal or not. Clusters above are from independent 2026 guides; the chain's own locator is the final word on any individual store.

What's on the halal menu

In a certified store, the menu is the standard Subway menu minus pork, with the meats halal-certified. The halal lineup includes Chicken Tikka, Turkey Ham, Turkey Rashers, Steak & Cheese, Beef Meatballs (at some locations) and Veggie Delite — with bacon, ham and pepperoni removed. The turkey products are the interesting part: they're the halal substitutes for pork items, made from certified halal turkey rather than pork.

Two caveats that independent guides flag and we repeat. First, the bread: Subway's breads are not separately halal-certified, and some varieties contain emulsifiers that strict diners may want to check. Second, the sauces: some contain vinegar, flavourings or emulsifiers that are not halal-certified, so the strictest approach is to stick to clearly plant-based sauces or ask. The certification covers the meat program and the store's handling — not every ingredient on the shelf. In practice, the meats are the reason you're there; the bread and sauce question is a personal-strictness footnote, not the main event.

How to check your specific Subway

First, use Subway UK's store locator and filter by halal — it's the chain's own tool and the most reliable source. Second, look at the store itself: certified stores display “All Meats Are Halal” signage on the window, the menu panel and the nutrition boards. Third, ask the staff directly whether the branch is a participating halal store and what the certification covers — in a genuine certified store this is a routine question with a routine answer.

Fourth, ask to see the certificate. A certified store can show you its current certification (Islamic Foundation of Ireland and/or HFA, depending on the store). If the staff can't produce or explain the certification, treat the claim as unverified. Fifth, remember the March 2026 lesson: when social-media rumours claimed chains were switching to halal nationwide, both KFC and Subway confirmed nothing of the sort had happened — always verify the store, never the rumour.

Famous but excluded: the Subway that is not halal

“The Subway on Oxford Street, in the City, or at the motorway services? Not halal.”

Nine out of ten UK Subways are standard stores: they serve bacon, ham, pepperoni and conventional chicken, beef and turkey. That includes nearly every Subway in central London's shopping and tourist districts, at train stations, motorway services and airports. Walking into a random Subway because you saw a halal one in Whitechapel last week is exactly the extrapolation error to avoid. The certified network is geographically concentrated — outside the clusters above, assume a Subway is not halal until its own signage and the locator say otherwise.

Practical tips

  1. Always check the specific store — ~200 of 2,000+ UK Subways are certified; the rest are not.
  2. Use Subway UK's store locator halal filter before travelling to a branch.
  3. Look for “All Meats Are Halal” signage on the window and menu board.
  4. Ask to see the certification (IFI and/or HFA) — a genuine certified store will have it.
  5. On sauces and bread, ask if you're strict — the certification covers the meat program.
  6. Never trust social-media claims that chains have “gone halal” nationwide — both KFC and Subway denied exactly that rumour in March 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Not nationwide. Around 200 of Subway's 2,000+ UK stores are fully halal-certified — they serve only halal meat and no pork at all. The majority of UK Subways are standard stores with no halal certification. Status is strictly store-by-store.

Use Subway UK's store locator and filter by halal, look for “All Meats Are Halal” signage on the window or menu board, and ask staff to confirm the store's halal certification before ordering. Halal stores cluster in London (East London), Birmingham, Bradford, Manchester and Leicester.

Halal-certified stores serve halal versions of items like Chicken Tikka, Turkey Ham, Turkey Rashers, Steak & Cheese and Veggie Delite — with pork items removed from the menu entirely. Bread and sauces are generally not separately halal-certified, so strict diners should ask.

The meat is supplied by Dawn Farm Foods in Ireland and certified by bodies including the Islamic Foundation of Ireland, with many stores also displaying HFA certification. The certified store should be able to show you the certificate.

Some branches are. Halal-certified Subway stores are concentrated in East London — Whitechapel, East Ham, Ilford, Southall and Walthamstow are the main clusters. Most other London Subways are not halal. See our London halal guide for dedicated alternatives too.

Subway UK restaurants do not sell alcohol at all — halal or standard stores. Drinks are soft drinks and coffee, so alcohol is a non-issue at every UK Subway.

Subway is fully halal in Muslim-majority markets (Malaysia, Indonesia, the Gulf states) under national certification. In mainland Europe there is no UK-style halal store network — the UK's ~200 certified stores are the exception, not the rule.

Final thoughts

Subway's UK halal program is one of the better chain offerings in Europe: genuine halal-only stores, no pork in the building, real certification, and a published way to find them. The weakness is scale — 1 in 10 stores — and the chain's own quietness about the network. The rule still holds: trust the store, not the brand. Find a certified one, check the signage, and you'll eat as confidently as at any dedicated halal spot.
